I’ve been compromised. Those words, along with an address, spoken in a frantic phone call had pulled Manuel out of bed in the middle of the night. Now here he was, zipping down a dark city street on his Raybar motorcycle, his black helmet hiding his identity from anyone who might take notice of him.
As a dead man, he preferred to use more discreet modes of transportation, but the urgency of the call he’d received from the CIA case officer serving here in Honduras had forced him to opt for speed and efficiency over invisibility. Besides, at two thirty in the morning, the streets of Danli were practically deserted.
Why was it always the middle of the night when people needed help? In his line of work, that happened far more often than he cared to admit, but just once, couldn’t someone call him during regular business hours?
But gangs didn’t work regular business hours. Manuel and his family had learned that lesson the hard way.
An increased urgency bubbled inside him. The CIA officer in jeopardy had a family: a wife and two daughters. Manuel might have lost access to his own family when he’d first joined the guardian program, but he was determined to do everything possible to get Fernando back to his.
His motorcycle engine vibrated through the otherwise quiet city streets, and his chest tightened as he approached his intended destination. His hands fisted tighter on the handlebar grips of his motorcycle, his headlight slicing through the night. He cut through an alley behind a string of restaurants and shops. Then he whipped onto the road and around the corner of a hardware store.
Above the growl of his engine, a popping sound pierced the air. Three shots. He couldn’t see the shooter, nor were the bullets aimed at him, but that didn’t keep his chest from tightening. In an instant, he was transported back to that pivotal day in Alabama, a deep-seated fear enhancing his survival instincts.
About the Author
Traci Hunter Abramson was born in Arizona, where she lived until moving to Venezuela for a study abroad program. After graduating from Brigham Young University, she worked for the Central Intelligence Agency, eventually resigning in order to raise her family. She credits the CIA with giving her a wealth of ideas as well as the skills needed to survive her children’s teenage years. She loves to travel and recently retired after twenty-six years coaching her local high school swim team. She has written forty-five best-selling novels and is an eight-time Whitney Award winner, including 2017 and 2019 Best Novel of the Year.
