“Never waste good rum on a bad night.” – Teddy Lawless, February 1926.

There are many bad nights ahead for Teddy. Shortly after she arrives at the newly opened Vinoy Hotel in Saint Petersburg, she comes face to face with her ex-fiancé, Ansel Stevens, in the dining room. Cue the slap that was thirty years in the making. Unfortunately, her ex-fiancé dies during a yacht race shortly thereafter. Conclusion of the authorities: poison. His family closes ranks, leaving Teddy as the prime suspect. Worse, Teddy’s hair comb is found on the deck of Ansel’s boat, leading to her swift arrest.

Can Cornelia Pettijohn and Uncle Percival save fun-loving Teddy before she goes from the grand hotel to the big house?

My Favorite Tunes

My name is Teddy Lawless, and I love music, especially in this modern era. It’s not that I didn’t love learning to play Debussy or Chopin on the piano, but I prefer Joplin, and Gershwin is the cat’s pajamas. You may have heard “Rhapsody in Blue,” which was commissioned by one of my favorite band leaders, Paul Whiteman, and there’s more where that came from.

The music I enjoy the most is for dancing, of course. I can’t dance for as long as I used to, but a lively tune at a swell party can lift me on my feet and keep me going longer than is strictly good for me. Mr. Whiteman’s orchestra is responsible for several of my best-loved recordings, like “The Japanese Sandman” and “Charlestonette.” There are many, many songs for doing the Charleston besides “The Charleston,” like “Charleston Fever,” “Charleston Baby,” and “I’m Gonna Charleston Back To Charleston”. They bring all the sheiks and shebas to the floor, that’s for sure.

Other songs I enjoy are “Bugle Call Rag” and “Everybody Stomp,” both penned by Elmer Schoebel. “Cut Yourself A Piece of Cake (and Make Yourself at Home) by Billy Jones makes me laugh. “Everything’s Hotsy-Totsy Now” is also a lot of fun.

“Davenport Blues” by Bix Beiderbecke is nice for a romantic dance, not that I do many of those. When I served as a nurse during the Great War, I danced with many a soldier, but I’m sure they were thinking of their sweethearts back home, not a maiden aunt.

I’m looking forward to what music comes next in the Twenties. It’s been the berries so far!

About Gwen Mayo

Gwen Mayo is passionate about blending the colorful history of her native Kentucky with her love for mystery fiction. She currently lives and writes in Safety Harbor, Florida, but grew up in a large Irish family in the hills of Eastern Kentucky.

Her stories have appeared in anthologies, at online short fiction sites, and in micro-fiction collections. She belongs to Sisters in Crime, SinC Guppies, the Short Mystery Fiction Society, and the Independent Book Publishers Association.

Gwen attended the University of Kentucky on a poetry scholarship but has an associate degree in business and a bachelor’s degree in political science. Interesting side note: Gwen was a brakeman and railroad engineer from 1983 – 1987.

About Sarah E. Glenn

Sarah E. Glenn loves mystery and horror stories, often with a sidecar of humor. Several have appeared in mystery and paranormal anthologies, including G.W. Thomas’ Ghostbreakers series, Futures Mysterious Anthology Magazine, and Fish Tales: The Guppy Anthology. She belongs to Sisters in Crime, SinC Guppies, and the Short Mystery Fiction Society.

Her great-great aunt served as a nurse in WWI, and was injured by poison gas during the fighting. After being mustered out, she traveled widely. A hundred years later, ‘Aunt Dess’ would inspire Sarah to write stories she would likely not have approved of.

☃️SNOWMAN by @iam_a_em

"Call me a monster if you want," I muttered, softer, staring at her lifeless body. "But the monster is just an image I want you to see."

📣 BLURB

They say we inherit the sins of those who came before us, a curse handed down from father to son, generation after generation. But me—I carry my own sin. A deep, insatiable hunger, a craving for blood that never fades.

Until I saw her.

There was something in her eyes, a spark of warmth in all that coldness. I knew I needed her. I wanted her to come outside, to play in the snow with me, to build a snowman. And maybe… just maybe… if we could be like children again, if we could lose ourselves in the frost and cold, she could save me.

🚀 You Shouldn't Have Answered by @iam_a_em

𝐁𝐋𝐔𝐑𝐁

Aurelia Vale had it all: a perfect family, a perfect fiancé, a career as a piano prodigy, and a future carefully planned before her. Then, in one night, everything disappeared. A tragic accident shattered her life, leaving her as the only one who survived.
When a small ad in the back of a newspaper offers her ninety days of solitude at a cliffside gothic mansion in Mendocino, California, Aurelia takes it as a sign to disappear.
The first night is easy. By the second, she feels eyes on her. Someone is watching her, leaving letters on her doorstep and calling her in the middle of the night. Eventually, she had enough and answered only one call.
And the man who has been watching her finally appears.
“You shouldn’t have answered,” the words she will never forget.
This is a psychological thriller and dark romance set in the 90s, a tragic and emotional story filled with trauma and grief that will stay with you long after the final page.
