The legendary Native American Spirit Woman and her mountain lion companion, said to appear in times of trouble, are once again sighted near Lockleer Mountain. And there is trouble aplenty.
Twenty-four hours after Joe and his brother, Cyrus, quarrel over the ownership of a winning million dollar lottery ticket, Cyrus’s mutilated body is found in the mountains, ravaged by the local wildlife. Sheriff Peabody and Deputy Nate Darling are soon puzzled by stolen VA hospital drugs found in Cyrus’s bedroom. It seems likely the suspected homicide is either connected to the contested lottery ticket or the drugs.
Hearing of the crowds that inevitably follow such a disturbing event, Rosita Ramirez, a transient with two children, comes to Lockleer Mountain to sell homemade tamales. She is befriended by Nate’s fiancé, Lou Shoemaker, owner of the Pooper Scooper sewer disposal truck. Rosita parks her old motorhome at the First Baptist Church and Lou aids her in acquiring employment at the local diner.
Soon, malicious gossip erupts about Rosita and the pastor. The church deacons are divided between ignoring unproven gossip, versus concern the gossip will divide the congregation and affect the future of the church.
In addition to finding a killer, Sheriff Peabody and his deputies are now tasked with exposing the perpetrator of the gossip, or the pastor will be forced to leave. How can the Spirit Woman and her companions bring about a solution to the troubles that plague the rural community?

The Katchina Spirit Woman Connection Elaine Faber
I have just released my latest cozy mystery novel. Spirit Woman Legends and Lies is a fictional story set in the lower California Sierra Mountains in Lockleer Mountain, a small town near a fictional Native American reservation. The Spirit Woman in this story is an imaginary mid-western Hopi tribe Kachina spirit.
The concept behind a ‘Katchina spirit being’ is represented by three different aspects; the supernatural being, the Kachina dancers, and Kachina dolls carved in the likeness of the Kachina spirit figure. Each Kachina spirit is viewed as a powerful being that uses its particular power for human good, bringing rain, healing, fertility, or protection. The supernatural being appears to help with everyday life problems.
The Spirit Woman in this novel is a Kachina being (woman) who comes to this particular setting when there is trouble. With her powers, she is able to bring about certain resolutions to the troubled community. To aid her efforts, she travels with a mountain lion companion and a white owl, though legend has it that when the owl is seen ‘during the daytime,’ an unexpected death is about to occur.
The white owl is spotted near town, followed by the death and suspected murder of the owner of a contested lottery ticket. It triggers the return of the Spirit Woman and her companions. (See The Spirit Woman of Lockeer Mountain, the first in the Spirit Woman series.)
When the mountain lion and glimpses of the woman are seen in the woods, there are mixed feelings within the community. Is she real, imaginary due to the Native American legend or a symptom of mass hysteria? There is no question that her appearance coincides with events that often change a situation into a more positive outcome. But how can she help stem the town gossip that threatens to split the Baptist Church and end the career of the well-loved pastor?
It is up to Sheriff Peabody and Deputy Nate to find the killer. With the aid of Lou Shoemaker, Nate’s fiancé, and owner of a local sewer truck, The Pooper Scooper, they must also head off a collision course for the pastor and Rosita, a transient with two children, caught up in the lies being spread by an unknown assailant.
