My Thoughts
You Can Run is an edge-of-the-seat thriller that never lets readers catch their breath from start to finish. Rachel is a woman tortured by her past. She seeks to break the spell of her evil, murderous father and emerge from its lightless shadows into freedom on another shore.
In this way, the author subtly portrays how a traumatic past profoundly affects an individual’s present life and gets into ours to make us sympathize with Rachel’s fears and worries. Taut finishing: The tension rises slowly but surely throughout the novel, culminating in a crescendo as Rachel’s father is released from prison and repeated murders take place.
Isolation of Rachel: One of the most conspicuous elements in the novel. Rachel is happily married, but her husband doesn’t take this fear of her father seriously. She copes alone with the problem. This adds an emotional ingredient to the novel and makes Rachel’s plight all the more pathetic.
But the absolute terror of Rachel’s situation is only realized at the close, in an unexpected twist that leaves readers gasping. The climax comes suddenly and terribly, a testament to the author’s ability to build continuity into a suspenseful narrative.
Overall, You Can Run is a chilling study of fear and the brutality humans find within themselves. You cannot miss it if you are a fan of psychological thrillers. Highly recommend!
