Sierra’s mind clouded, and her knees threatened to buckle. She would do whatever it took to prevent this monster from taking her nephew. If she had to die to fulfill the promise she’d made to Megan to keep the baby safe, so be it.
Shut the door. His demand repeated in her head.
Unable to speak, Sierra turned, and the bags she was holding bounced against her sides. She let them fall to the hardwood floor before slowly reaching for the knob with a trembling hand.
Maybe someone would walk by, and she could signal for help. But as she pressed the door into its frame, the only movement outside came from leaves swept down the residential street by a gust of wind.
“Secure the bolt!”
Sierra jerked in reaction to his anger, then followed his command, locking out help—and hope. She sucked in a shuddering breath and turned to face the madman, unsure what he wanted and too afraid to ask.
